Working Principle

Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) rely on a system architecture composed of three core components: the backend system, electronic shelf labels, and base stations (gateways).
Role: Acts as the "brain" of the ESL system. It manages pricing data, promotions, inventory synchronization, and communication with electronic price tags. Key Functions:Data Management: Stores product information (price, descriptions, promotions) and maps each product to its corresponding ESL.Update Scheduling: Allows retailers to push real-time updates (e.g., price changes, flash sales) to specific tags or groups of tags.Integration: Syncs with external systems like POS (Point of Sale), ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), or inventory databases to ensure consistency.Security: Uses encryption (e.g., AES-128) to protect data integrity during transmission.Monitoring: Tracks ESL battery levels, connectivity status, and update success rates.
Role: Digital displays that replace paper labels. Each tag is assigned to a specific product or shelf location. Key Features:E-Paper Display: Uses electrophoretic ink (e-ink) for low-power, sunlight-readable screens. Only consumes power when content changes (enabling years of battery life). Wireless Communication: The embedded wireless private protocol receives updates from the base station.Unique identifiers (e.g., MAC addresses) ensure targeted updates. Microcontroller (MCU):Processes update commands and manages power states (sleeps when inactive). Battery:Typically uses coin-cell batteries (e.g., CR2450) lasting 5 years due to ultra-low power consumption.
Role: Acts as a bridge between the backend system and electronic price tags, facilitating wireless communication. Key Functions:Network Hub:Deployed strategically in-store to ensure full coverage.Uses mesh networking (in some systems) to relay signals between tags and extend coverage. Data Relay:Receives updates from the backend via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular networks.Broadcasts encrypted data packets to ESLs over low-power wireless private protocols. Two-Way Communication:Some systems enable tags to send acknowledgments or sensor data (e.g., battery status) back to the backend.
